The Central Yavapai Fire District on Nov. 5 appointed Assistant Chief of Operations Scott Bliss interim fire chief, a CYFD spokesman said Friday.

Bliss "will remain in the position until the hiring process for a new fire chief is completed," CYFD Fire Marshal Rick Chase said.

"By policy, Chief (Paul) Nies has left employment, so we let policy dictate the fact that Scott Bliss would become interim chief," CYFD Board President Steve Rutherford said.

The Fire Board and former Chief Nies reached an agreement that led to his departure, he said, although he said he was "not at liberty to discuss" it.

Rutherford said Bliss has his support. "I think Scott Bliss will make a very good interim chief."

Bliss has been with Central Yavapai Fire District for 23 years.
