enlisting as an underage recruit|
Nimocks recalls first trying to get into the Marine Corps by changing the numbers on his birth certificate, but the different colored ink tipped off officials. He then offered himself to the Army, which accepted his birth certificate but required a written test. He failed the test the first time, but by purely guessing at the answers, took it again and passed. Nimocks, 77, served his country from 1947 through 1950, and received an honorable discharge at age 18, enlisting while just 15 years old.|

Humboldt Elementary School hosts a Safety Day every year where local fire dept, police, sheriff's office, DPS, APS, canine officers, animal control, Patriot disposal, tow companies, etc. meet on the athletic field and give short presentations to a morning full of rotating classes.|
The goal is to expose kids to these people in uniform/authority in a non-threatening atmosphere, rather than have their first experience when officers arrive at their front door and perhaps arrest a parent, or arrive in uniform, face mask, and helmet to combat a fire.

The Prescott Arizona Kennel Club conducted its 52nd and 53rd championship dogs shows on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13, 2009 in Chino Valley. More than 1,100 dogs competed each day for the coveted Best in Show title. Winner of Best in Show on Saturday was a Doberman, and Sunday's top dog was an Affenpinscher. Spectators enjoyed checking out their favorite breeds, shopping from vendors who carried "everything dog" or watching handlers prepare their dogs for the show ring.|

New Northern Arizona Regional Training Academy Class Sgt. James Edelstein took over his first class of law enforcement recruits on Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, after 12-year Class Sgt. Joe Cappelli moved on to the Chief of Police position at Yavapai College. Edlestein said he is gratified by the progress the class has made in its first week at the academy, which trains law enforcement recruits from all over Northern Arizona. NARTA Commander Steve Francis said Edelstein has the right vision to lead the academy into the future.|

Since then, they have learned a lot, and are putting that knowledge to use taking care of the beloved pets of evacuees from the Lane 2 fire near Crown King. ADS is looking for volunteers to help walk and generally love up on dogs sheltered at Mayer High School.

When someone plunges off a rock or trail in the Dells, on Thumb Butte, off Granite Mountain or another area attraction, it is often as dangerous for those who must rescue them as it is for the victim. That's why a group of firefighters from Central Yavapai Fire District spent a day this past week rappelling up and down a steep portion of rock over Watson Lake. With a Stokes rescue basket and an elaborate setup of ropes and pulleys, they gained experience in how to lower themselves to a victim and bring them safely to a place where they can receive emergency medical care.|

The Bradshaw Mountain Bears and Raymond Kellis Cougars traded field goals and touchdowns for a 10-10 tie, sending the exciting game into overtime Friday night, Sept. 28, 2007 in Prescott Valley. In overtime action, Kellis failed in its field goal attempt while Bradshaw's Ben Pigg returned from an earlier injury to kick a successful field goal. The field goal, kicked on third down, gave the home team a 13-10 homecoming victory and improved the Bears record to 3-3 on the season. See story in Wednesday's Tribune.|
