Members of the Humboldt Unified School District governing board applauded as two employees and a volunteer of Liberty Traditional School received awards at the Jan. 14 meeting.
Sara Dawson - Certified Employee of the Month
Sara Dawson's seventh-grade Language Arts students are "excited learners," said Liberty Traditional School Principal Michael DeRois. DeRois nominated Dawson for the HUSD Certified Employee of the Month.
"Sara drives me crazy. I think she enjoys that," he said in jest.
DeRois described Dawson as someone who challenges her students and encourages creativity ad originality. She enters the classroom "dynamic" every day, and students leave feeling dynamic themselves.
Dawson serves on four school site committees, leads professional development, and is successful in communicating between the classroom, home and office.
DeRois also said Dawson will take her lunchtime to tutor a student in need.
"She has a willingness to do what it takes to help children learn, and will find the time, resources, material and personnel to accomplish it," he said.
BobbiJo DesJarlais - Classified Employee of the Month
BobbiJo DesJarlais' work ethic and diligence impressed Principal DeRois, who called DesJarlais "an extraordinary woman."
DesJarlais has worked at Liberty Traditional School as a Title 1 aide for the past five years.
"Besides being a joy to work with, Mrs. DesJarlais is a take-charge person who is dedicated and able to present creative solutions when we are in desperate need for a way to cover personnel," DeRois said, adding that she can cover playground, office, cafeteria or classrooms when needed. "She has consistently demonstrated an ability to rise to any challenge that she must face."
He called DesJarlais inspiring, motivating, and a tremendous asset to Liberty and the Humboldt District.
Yvonne Allen - Volunteer of the Month
HUSD Volunteer Coordinator Noreen Juarez-Alexander nominated Yvonne Allen because of Allen's involvement in the school's PTO, After School Club and especially for the help she gives during Picture Day.
Allen has two daughters, her fourth-grader attends Liberty, her older daughter attends Tri-City Prep. She volunteers in order to stay involved and offer support when needed. She's been volunteering since her older daughter was in fifth grade, and she has increased her volunteer time since then.
Her background in accounting also has led to Allen taking on the treasurer position with Liberty's Parent Teacher Organization.
