At Shadow Ridge's tri-meet this past week, the Bradshaw Mountain High boys' cross country squad upended a Youngker team that hadn't lost a Wednesday meet this season. Final scores were: Bradshaw 27, Youngker 43, and Shadow Ridge 62.
Bradshaw's Saul Martinez managed the top time of 17:33 for all comers on the 3.1-mile course in Surprise. Teammates Satchel Clifford and Cody Sharp placed 4th and 5th three seconds apart, with 17:56 and 17:59 respectively, while Randy Ayala took 7th in 18:21, and Eli Shaffer was 10th in 18:59.
"As a group, our boys had a very solid performance, and ran well as a group, with five in the top 10," Bradshaw coach Mike Simon said.
Bradshaw's Lady Bears came in second, with scores: Youngker 23, Bradshaw 50, and Shadow Ridge 94.
Top Lady Bear of the afternoon was Desiree Woodruff, who placed 2nd with 22:07. She barely edged teammate Hannah Madler in 3rd with the same recorded time of 22:07. Athena Dias finished 9th in 23:24; Erika Meza was 13th in 24:03, and Kyanna Bruhner placed 23rd in 26:55.
"With our girls, we're just trying to close the gap between the one and five runners," Simon said. "If we can do that, we have a shot at making it to state championships."
The previous week, Bradshaw Mountain's boys nearly swept their portion of a 4-way meet at Betty Fairfax High in Laveen.
The top four finished in a tight pack on the 3-mile course, with Martinez first in 15:31, followed by Clifford, 15:35, Sharp, 15:37, and Ayala, 15:49. Shaffer was seventh in 16:49.
The Bears' winning score was 17. Cortez was a distant second at 68, with Cactus in third, 72, and Fairfax fourth, 76.
The girls' scores were somewhat closer. The Lady Bears edged Cactus 38 to 43, trailed by Fairfax, 68, and Cortez, 89.
Hannah Madler placed second overall with 19:22. Bradshaw garnered the fifth through seventh spots from, respectively: Woodruff, 19:45; Dias, 21:24; and Meza, 21:25. Bruner finished in 16th place with 23:27.
