Bradshaw Mountain junior Ryan Madler kept warm on a damp 50-degree afternoon by capturing his first career victory in a major cross country invitational. Madler outran the rain and the boys' field Thursday with a time of 16:48 in a nail-biter at the sixth annual Yavapai County Championships.

"It was awesome, back and forth all the way," said BMHS coach Mike Simon. "The other guy (Mingus' Juan Wells) pulled ahead again near the end and Ryan came from behind for the win - just an outstanding race."

The Bears placed third and the Lady Bears fourth of six teams on the 3.1-mile course at Prescott's Antelope Hills Golf Course.

Also for the Bears, Esteban Morales' 17:21 was good for 6th.

Sarah Ashburn's 6th, in 20:58, was the Lady Bears' top place, while Heidi Madler and Desiree Woodruff placed respectively 11th and 12th, in 21:50 and 22:24.

Bradshaw will compete at the state-qualifying sectional meet Saturday at Sandra Day O'Connor High's home course at Skunk Creek Park in Phoenix.
