Sundogs split games with Mavericks

In front of a crowd of nearly 3,200, the Arizona Sundogs opened their home hockey season Friday with a 3-2 victory over the Missouri Mavericks. The next night the Mavericks triumphed 5-4 in a shootout.

Friday, the Sundogs' Chad Nehring found the net first, less than three minutes in, with assists from Kyle Chipchura and Mario Larocque. Mizzou equalized late in the first, which ended in a 1-1 knot.

Just over two minutes into the second period, Mikael Bedard broke the tie for the home squad. Nine minutes later, Jason Morgan made it 3-1 by redirecting David Schlemko's shot.

The Mavericks managed a lone third period goal to end the night's scoring.

David Brown got the win in goal.

Saturday, Nehring again opened scoring, but not until the second period. Within minutes, he added his second of the game.

Back-to-back goals from Missouri's Kellan Tochkin and Trevor Kell tied the tally before the second ended and the Mavericks pulled ahead 3-2 with just over two minutes to go in the third frame.

Jeff Kyrzakos and the Sundogs sent the game into overtime with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation.

Neither team's first five shooters could score in the shootout, but the Mav's John-Scott Dickson broke the deadlock, and after Kyrzakos missed the Sundogs' final shot, gained the win.

Adam Russo suffered the loss in the net after stopping 31 shots in regulation and another 5 in shootout.

The Sundogs will try to scare up their next victory tonight against the Fort Worth Brahmas. The Halloween puck drops at Tim's Toyota Center at 6:05 p.m.
