Letter: Writer clarifies position on First Amendment letter

I apparently touched a nerve with Mr. Desmond and Ms. Weber as I posed the question: does political correctness trump the first amendment's protection of freedom of speech.

The freedom of speech acknowledges each of us has protection to speak freely while offending others. The words need not be socially acceptable.

At no point did I say I agree with Donald Sterling or that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was unlawfully punishing Mr. Sterling. And both Mr. Desmond and Ms. Weber are correct in stating contract law is supreme in this case.

My summary point was that most likely this became a "big deal" due to the major media's support for political correctness. This is a slippery slope that could become law.

In Canada "hate speech" as determined by a Human Rights Commission can invoke penalties up to five years in jail and or fines up to $10,000. I suggest we may need the first amendment's protection if we go the way of Canada.

Sir, the slippery-slope is not a one-way street. You are correct that, if unchecked, the slippery-slope to the left will ultimately lead to socialism, but, if left unchecked, the slippery-slope to the right leads to fascism.

Democrats have never brought a bill before Congress to make "political correctness" the law of the land. There has never been a Democratic candidate to even CAMPAIGN on such an idea! Yet you seem to have it in your mind that there is some "vast left-wing conspiracy" to undermine the First Amendment, if not America itself.

There are no such meetings. There is no such talk. If there were , I would fight shoulder to shoulder with you against it.

Democrats are your neighbors--not plants from Russia! Democrats are NOT the enemy of freedom. Tyranny is the enemy of freedom and tyranny can rear its ugly head in ANY political party.

Why don't we drop the vitriol and fear-mongering between everyday americans?
