1/15/2014 9:19:00 AM Letter: Sad day when teacher decides to leave field
It is with a very heavy heart that I write this. Today is a shameful day for education. We are losing another fantastic teacher to an alternate career path.
She inspires children with creativity and caring. Just today, as she was planning a lesson about the events leading to the American Revolution, I watched as she had the school principal reward the class with "play" money for their academic performance and then "tax" them for items they use such as paper and bathroom breaks. A discussion ensued about how outrageous it was to be rewarded only to be taxed. Watching the children get riled up and consider plans of action was incredible. They decided to write business letters to inform the principal of their discontent and to demand more civil treatment. The teacher then presented the history of the Intolerable Acts that led to the American Revolution. It was nothing short of extraordinary to see the light bulbs go on for these students as they related the history of our great nation to their own experiences. The expert fashion in which these lessons were woven together was genius and it was not an anomaly. This teacher puts just as much thought and consideration into all of her work.
But today is a sad day. It is a day where this brilliant, gifted teacher has decided that she cannot afford to live on the salary that she receives. It is painful to know that we continue to mortgage our future and the future of these children while our state and locality rank at the bottom of the nation in teacher salaries.
We need to wake up and reward distinguished educators or it will be too late. If only her lovely students in that classroom were aware of the real injustice that occurs today!
