Christopher Eis, Dewey-Humboldt, earned the $1,000 Frontier Rotary Chuck Pfeifer Memorial Award for his outstanding performance in Sunday's Prescott Center for the Arts Scholarship Awards Program.

In addition, the 15-year-old won first place in Division II Piano for $450, and the judges' $150 award for Outstanding Performance in Division II.

Eis said he will use the money to help pay for music classes at Yavapai College. He is a student of Christina Robertson, a winner herself in the first competition in 1983.

Another Prescott piano teacher, Ed Roman, complimented Eis after his performance, calling it "suicidal" to tackle Liszt.

"It's a huge risk, technically almost impossible," Roman said.

Eis played Franz Liszt's La Campanella, which uses a melody from the final movement of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor, and requires dexterity, accuracy and speed. Eis gave a remarkable performance, especially after considering he had cut his thumb earlier in the day when changing the oil in his parents' vehicle.

Other winners from Sunday's performances include the JoAn Ramsey Outstanding Performance Division I for $150 to Jordan Klipton, who also won $250 for first place in the Division I Voice category and $350 for first place in Division I Musical Theatre.

Melody Startzell earned the JoAn Ramsey Division II Voice award and the Tony Saverino award for Division II Musical Theatre. Startzell entered three categories of the competition and also earned the $50 PCA Founder's Award for a total of $1,050.

Summer Allen won the second PCA Founder's Award of $50 to add to her honors as second place Division II Voice ($350), third place Division II Musical Theatre ($200), third place in Drama ($150), and an unprecedented fourth entry in the Fine Arts competition.
