All schools will receive interior touch up painting and repairs to the mop sinks. Elementary school playgrounds will be replenished with sand, and several school crosswalks will be restriped and windows will be repaired.
Other projects include: HES - install two new doors between the cafeteria and gym, repaint the principal's office, clean electric rooms, repair the drain pipes on the gym building, repair fencing and the rubber coat the play center steps; BMMS - install new exterior classroom door knobs and hail guards on HVAC, remove evergreen bushes and wood bleachers, weight room equipment repairs, repair stadium bleachers; MVES - help with ADA playground installation, install security fencing; CSES - relocate playground bench, install a new frost-free drinking fountain on lower playground, clear weeds, repair rubber coating on playground equipment, repaint the west exterior end of gym; LVES - Make repairs to the artificial turf field, repair and repaint the parapet cap, replace the sky-light curbing in 5-6 commons, replace ceiling tile as needed; LTS - repair the Building E roofing, sidewalks and the fire proof cabinets in the lab, replace ceiling tiles, remove the dome climber; GES - remove the dome climber; BMHS-E - repair exterior lighting; GHMS - replace ceiling tile, secure science lab materials, sidewalk and play structures repairs; BMHS-W - top dress courtyard lawns and reseed, replace all classroom door knobs and ceiling tiles, repair damaged exit sign cages, all exterior door weather stripping, gym bleachers, correct science lab shelving, fencing, dry wall, and seating repairs at stadium.
HUSD had nearly 200 teachers participating in Professional Development classes. These one-day classes include Close Reading - exploring comprehension strategies and scaffold reading instruction with tools that address six close reading practices; Common Core Phase I - an introduction to Common Core ELA; Math and the PARCC Assessment, Guided Reading - organizational strategies, lesson planning, and classroom management techniques; Exploring the Wonder of Science Through children's Literature - a variety of ways to utilize children's literature to teach scientific concepts; Daily Writing Without Tears - exploring many exciting literacy options to apply in the classroom to motivate students, while instilling the love of writing; Inductive Math - introduction of teachers to the meaning of inquiry learning in mathematics; and Arizona Technology Integration Matrix - a resource for integrating technology into the classroom.
In addition, teachers attended two weeks of Inductive Math lesson development where they developed lessons aligned to math curriculum that they can refer to when implementing inductive math teaching strategies. This training is provided by Sue Larson, who just finished up her second year with the district training teachers in grades K-8 grade in inductive math principles. Next year, she will be moving to the high school where she will be working with ninth-grade teachers.
